Nowhere else in the nation can young playwrights receive the prize of seeing their vision come to life on stage in a professional production featuring known actors from film, television and theatre. There are no submission fees for this program.
Nearly every Monday night, we produce a “workshop” staged reading of a new play with a week of rehearsals. The author is given access to experienced actors and directors who interpret the play and help the writer hone their story.
New plays and playwrights are given a safe and nurturing environment where they can explore their emerging scripts and present them to an audience.
We develop and produce 32 to 36 new plays each year in this program. These productions have consistently gone onto impressive venues around the world such as Manhattan Theatre Club & Transport Group (NYC), Laguna Playhouse, and Brideswell Theatre (London). These presentations are free to the public.
Each summer, 12 to 18 students (or sometimes returning veterans) from around the world are given invaluable hands-on immersion training in theatre as an integral part of the production team for the Young Playwrights Festival.
This program includes 8 symposiums with theatre professionals in the first week and then the apprentices become the stage managers, assistant directors, and design assistants and are offered a unique opportunity to work with 12 different directors during the course of the Festival.
This job-training program is free of charge. Visit this page for more details on apprenticeship opportunities.
We offer severely reduced rent (covering our expenses only) to companies of high caliber who need a home to do their work. It allows these theatre professionals to continue to work in Hollywood, which has been losing theatres and companies at an alarming rate.
