32nd Annual Young Playwrights Festival

The 32nd Annual Young Playwrights Festival at the Blank Theatre Company is now casting our 12 winning plays for 2024!

 

The Young Playwrights Festival is a 32 year-old nationwide play writing competition for writers ages 9 to 19. The 12 best plays were chosen by a panel of theatre professionals from submissions across America. Winning playwrights are provided careful mentoring and direction from industry professionals to help prepare their work for public performance and hone their skills, talent and confidence.

Most plays are 20 pages or less.

Rehearsals Begin: o/a June 17 - August 1
**Rehearsals for each piece run approx 2 1/2 weeks in a staggered schedule ending on August 1, 2024.

Run: Each Play runs one weekend, Thursday to Sunday between July 11 and August 4, 2024.

**Actors are only cast in one play each. Total time commitment for any participant is about two and a half weeks: two (2) weeks of rehearsal, one (1) weekend of performances (four total performances)

 

Rate: $100 flat expense reimbursement for participants

This production is Non-Equity. SAG/AFTRA members are welcome to submit.

 

ROLES:

HONEYBEE by Dakota Darnell

Synopsis: A student in her senior year is facing weighting guilt when deciding whether she should go to college further away or stay local, while coping with the circumstances that her upbringing wasn't typical due to her dad’s special accommodations. On the other hand, her father is struggling to make sure his daughter knows she is loved, and explores the side of parental guilt. This story explores themes of validation, family relationships,growing older and neurodivergence.

ELLIS: A forty-four year old radiologist and single parent to RORI. He is on the spectrum and non-speaking, therefore using a text-to-speech AAC device as a way to communicate. He enjoys the company of others, presenting as empathetic and emotive. He also exhibits traits of proactiveness because, if not prepared, he can fall into paralyzing anxiety. He often thinks of what his daughter's life could have been without his diagnosis.  *The device that suits the character the best are AAC’s that have a QWERTY keyboard to speech software. An example of this is an ALLORA 3, but open to all variety of AAC's.

DON'T CRY LITTLE LION-BEAR by Ashlynn Frangella

Synopsis: In the midst of war, a mother and child hide from danger. The child, scared and confused, just wants to understand why this is happening, so the mother tries to console the child by telling them a story; thus, creating the imaginary characters "Lion-Bear", "Fox", and "Deer", who are parallels to the child and their friends. The child uses this story as a brief respite, but then must face reality and learn deeper lessons of bravery, strength, love, and how to move forward.
 

CHILD: to play 10-13 years of age, active imagination, any gender or ethnicity

DEADLINE: Monday, May 20th at 12pm PST

SIDES: Please prepare the sides found HEREYour reader should be off camera.

Please send one take ONLY of your scene and attach your slate at the end of the performance so everything is in a single file.

Reels are not necessary at this point. If we need one, we will request it at a later date.

 

Extra performance notes: no accent or specific wardrobe is needed for this audition. This is any child, any mother, simply trying to survive. The goal is to find truth in the situation, as it makes sense to the actor.
